When to Know It’s Time

Every pet and pet owner is different and there is no perfect moment to make the ultimate choice of euthanasia, unless the pet is truly suffering and the quality of life has declined - which is something we are trying to prevent in the first place. Some signs and symptoms to help determine the most compassionate and appropriate care for your pet are:

Persistent pain or discomfort that cannot be managed effectively.
Loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed.
Difficulty breathing or frequent coughing.
Incontinence or loss of control over bodily functions.
Severe decline in mobility or inability to stand or walk.
Loss of appetite and significant weight loss.

Additionally, there is a subjective time frame, which may be hours, days, weeks, or months, when euthanasia is the appropriate decision. During this subjective time, the family has to make the decision they think is best for them and their pet. Some owners need time to come to terms with their pet’s decline, while others want to prevent any type of suffering. Every pet owner is different and entitled to their own thoughts and beliefs.

However, if the most important thing is waiting until the last possible minute to say goodbye, you will likely face an emergency and stress-filled passing for your pet that may not be peaceful, and you may regret waiting too long. If you wish for a peaceful, calm, loving end-of-life experience for your pet, you will probably need to make the decision a little sooner than you want. We always want to prioritize peace and comfort and make sure the animal is not suffering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will hospice care make my pet live longer?
Hospice care isn’t about extending life; it’s about making your pet’s last days as comfortable and peaceful as possible.
Is euthanasia still an option with hospice care?
Yes, at-home hospice care gives you time to consider euthanasia or allows a peaceful natural passing if your pet is comfortable.
How do I know it's the right time for euthanasia?
We know this is a hard decision. If your pet is in significant pain, not eating, or has lost quality of life, it may be time. We can help you assess their comfort level to make the best choice.
What happens during the euthanasia process?
First, we give your pet a gentle sedative to keep them calm. Once they’re relaxed, a final injection is given to allow them to pass peacefully, without pain.
Will my pet feel any pain?
No. The process is designed to be painless. We start with a sedative, so your pet is fully relaxed before the final injection.
What happens after my pet passes away?
After your pet’s peaceful passing, we will transport them to Open Arms Pet Cremation, our trusted partner. They will handle the cremation with care and contact you when your pet’s remains are ready for pickup or delivery.
Can I make special arrangements for my pet’s ashes?
Yes! Open Arms Pet Cremation offers a variety of urns, cremation jewelry, and keepsakes to honor your pet’s memory. You can explore their selection here: Urns & Cremation Jewelry
